I discovered today that the mgetty binary in my Red Hat 9.0 system wanted to reference /usr/lib/sendmail or not work at all. The problem presented itself as mgetty receiving a fax, spooling it to disk, and not doing anything else with it.
After creating a symlink for /usr/lib/sendmail (I’m using postfix instead of sendmail), mgetty was happy and resumed processing faxes like normal.
It’s an obscure problem, but potentially annoying.

A while back I had to send my laptop in to be repaired under AppleCare. Knowing full well what the problem was, I told them what was wrong and what I did to come to my conclusion. However, they still felt the need to erase my drive and prove themselves wrong. I ended up with a new logic board and new battery in addition to the empty hard drive.
Yes, I do backup. Every two days to a tape drive thanks to the nifty Retrospect backup client/server system. I thought my code tree was part of the stuff Retrospect was backing up, but upon restore, I realized only my Users directory was being backed up. All my VirtualDVHS work was under the Developer tree. Yeah, I know, it was pretty careless, and I was planning on posting the source code on this website. If I had, I’d still have it, but I hadn’t gotten around to it yet, so I don’t have anything.
My full time job is as a student (Computer Science), so that needs to take priority. Once I have some free time, I will work on getting VirtualDVHS back to the functionality that the binary available on this site provides. I apologize for the inconvienence this may cause some of you, and have since made my source trees known to Retrospect.

After many years of not working on Perl DBI stuff, I ran across this site that quickly refreshed what I already knew that I knew. Now it’s back to writing that script…

I currently have a Sun SPARCStation 4 sitting in my room. Of course, the unique monitor connection makes it impossible for me to fire it up without an adapter. eBay should have one. Once I have one of those, I should be able to turn it on and see if it works and stuff.

It looks like one of the TV stations here reads my HDTV in Reno page; I got an email yesterday about a correction in the information presented there. I’ve also gotten various emails from other people in the area about picking up the stations. Cool… It’s nice to know the page is useful.
In other news, KREN is off air again. And when they are broadcasting, it’s so low power, it’s unwatchable. One of my friends from school reports that their analog broadcast has also gone to crap a few days ago. Fortunately I have Dish Network and the Denver WB Superstation; I really wish I could get WB shows in HD, but KREN doesn’t want to play. I’m just going to consider them dead air until they figure out how to broadcast.

I read Usenet groups. I had a newsreader on my computer, Thoth, but while I was reinstalling all my software today I discovered that Thoth is no longer available for download anywhere. Apparently they publisher just up and decided to stop distributing it, and pull links, too. How freaking retarded is that? They get a super-suck rating from me.
So I’m going to give Unison a shot. I love their FTP client, Transmit, so chances are I’ll like their usenet reader, too.

I accidentally deleted all the sources for my VirtualDVHS project. And I was keeping them outside of the directory tree that gets backed up. Damn. I guess I get to start over from scratch when I can find time to do so.
In the meantime, the last binary version I had compiled is still available, which includes fast forward and rewind functions.
